Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic, is semisynthetic and derived from lincomycin by 7(S)-chloro-substitution of the 7(R)-hydroxyl group of lincomycin. It is marketed under various trade names, including Dalacin, Duac, BenzaClin, and Clindoxyl and Acanya (in combination with benzoyl peroxide), and Ziana (with tretinoin). Clindamycin together with pyrimethamine has been used as alternative treatment for toxoplasmic encephalitis in AIDS patients.
