Descriptions

Bile acids (BAs) are conjugated to either taurine or glycine. Various disorders are associated with different BA profiles. Alcoholic cirrhosis has been associated with extremely high levels of the taurine-conjugated BAs taurocholate, taurochenodeoxycholate, and tauroursodeoxycholate, moderately elevated levels of glycine-conjugated BAs, including glycocholate, glycochenodeoxycholate, and glycoursodeoxycholate, and mild elevation of nonconjugated BAs (cholate, chenodeoxycholate). Chenodeoxycholic Acid is one of two primary bile acids in humans, the other is Cholic Acid. Both of these bile acids are formed from cholesterol and converted by intestinal bacteria (through deconjugation and 7-alpha-hydroxylation) to the secondary bile acids, deoxycholic acid and lithocholic acid. Elevated concentrations often suggest impaired hepatic clearance due to liver disease. Serum Cholic Acid rises more in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy than does Chenodeoxycholic Acid.
