Descriptions

Creatine kinase (CK), also known as phosphocreatine kinase or creatine phosphokinase (CPK) is an enzyme expressed by various tissues. It catalyzes the conversion of creatine to phosphocreatine, consuming adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and generating adenosine diphosphate (ADP). In tissues that consume ATP rapidly, especially skeletal muscles, but also the brain and smooth muscles, creatine phosphate serves as an energy reservoir for the rapid regeneration of ATP, the major source of energy in biochemical reactions. A transferase that catalyzes formation of phosphocreatine from ATP + creatine and stores ATP energy as phosphocreatine. Three cytoplasmic isozymes have been identified in human tissues: the MM type from skeletal muscle, the MB type from myocardial tissue and the BB type from nervous tissue and mitochondrial isoenzyme. Macro-creatine kinase refers to creatine kinase complexed with other serum proteins. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
