Version 2.78

Description

Deoxycholic Acid is a secondary bile acid. Bile acids are formed in the liver, from cholesterol, stored and concentrated in the gallbladder, and excreted into the intestines in response to food. Intestinal bacteria converts primary bile acids (Cholic Acid and Chenodeoxycholic Acid) through deconjugation and 7-alpha-hydroxylation, into secondary bile acids. Elevated concentrations often suggest impaired hepatic clearance due to liver disease. An increase in secondary bile acids as well as a rise in the ratio of LCA (Lithocholic acid) to DCA (Deoxycholic Acid) has been observed in gallstone sufferers. Source: Regenstrief Institute
