Version 2.77

Description

Calciferol or ergocalciferol, also known as Vit D2, is a fat-soluble prohormone. Vitamin D has many functions including the regulation of calcium and phosphorus levels in blood, the promotion of bone formation and mineralization, and the boosting of the immune system. Vitamin D deficiency may result from inadequate dietary intake, insufficient sunlight, malabsorption problems, kidney or liver impairment. It occurs naturally in fish. Vitamin D2 is produced when UVB radiation from sunlight reacts with ergosterol. It is then hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol which in turn is hydroxylated in the kidney into two dihydroxylated metabolites which are 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (the active hormone) and 24R,25 (OH)2D3.
