Descriptions
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an X-linked recessive hereditary disease featuring nonimmune hemolytic anemia in response to a number of causes. The classic allergy to consumption of broad beans has led to the commonly used term favism, derived from the Italian name of the broad bean, fava. Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency causes hemolytic anemia following the use of some drugs, bacterial or viral infections, or metabolic disorder such as acidosis. Three G6PD variants occur frequently and have clinical implications in different ethnic groups. Heinz bodies may appear in peripheral red blood cells when G6PD-mediated hemolysis occurs. Younger red cells and reticulocytes contain more G6PD and may cause normal values if blood is collected following a hemolytic crisis. Source: Regenstrief Institute
