Version 2.77

Description

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is bound to 2 proteins in plasma, transcobalamin I (TC-1, sometimes called haptocorrin) and transcobalamin II (TC-II, called transcobalamin by those who use the term haptocorrin for transcobalamin I). TC-II saturated with vitamin B12 is known as holo-transcobalamin II (holo-TC-II) or "active" vitamin B12, which can be delivered into all DNA-synthesizing cells. Vitamin B12 bound to TC-1 (hapatocorrin) is unavailable in our metabolism. Apo-transcobalamin I and II (apo-TC-II and apo-TC-II) are unsaturated with vitamin b12. They play a role in the enterohepatic (re)cycling of cobalamin and are measured to diagnose the cause of a deficiency in B12. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
