Description

Glycolic acid (GA) is a metabolite of ethylene glycol (EG) and is responsible for the primary effects of EG poisoning, which include central nervous system depression, acute renal failure, and elevated anion gap metabolic acidosis. In cases of suspected EG poisoning, EG screening should be accompanied by a confirmatory method or simultaneous measurement of GA.The preferred methods for confirming EG and GA are chromatographic. Screening can be performed in serum or urine, and serum levels of both substances should be monitored during treatment in confirmed poisoning cases. The serum GA level provides more accurate diagnostic and prognostic information than does the EG level. PMID: 11897969 Source: Regenstrief LOINC, PMID: 11897969
