Version 2.77

Description

Homocarnosine, a normal metabolite, is the brain-specific dipeptide of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and histidine. Homocarnosine, rather than carnosine, is the major imidazole dipeptide in human CSF and can be detected in the CSF of normal infants and young children, while either not detectable or present only in small amounts in the CSF of normal adults. PMID: 1266573 Slightly greater amounts can be found in the CSF of some adults with neurological disorders. Homocarnosinosis (an inherited disorder) [OMIM: 236130], is characterized by an increased level of dipeptide homocarnosine (Hca) in CSF and the brain, and can co-exist with paraplegia, retinitis pigmentosa, and a progressive mental deficiency.
