Description
Streptococcus pyogenes, or Group A streptococcus (GAS), causes disease ranging from mild skin and throat infections (e.g. strep throat) to invasive life-threatening diseases, such as scarlet fever and necrotizing fasciitis ("flesh-eating disease"). The streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin B (speB) gene of S. pyogenes is detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods (e.g. real-time PCR). The speB gene is commonly detected among S. pyogenes but it is not present among all subgroups. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
