Version 2.77

Description

Pyruvic acid (CH3COCOOH), an organic acid, is also a ketone and the simplest alpha-keto acid. The carboxylate (COOH) ion (anion) of pyruvic acid, CH3COCOO-, known as pyruvate, is a key intermediary in several metabolic pathways. It can be made from glucose through glycolysis and it supplies energy to living cells via the citric acid cycle. It can also be converted to carbohydrates via gluconeogenesis, fatty acids or generate energy through acetyl-CoA, the amino acid alanine, and ethanol.
