t(4;14)(p16;q32)(FGFR3,IGH)
Active
Description
The t(4;14)(p16;q32)(FGFR3,IGH) is detected by FISH and PCR methods, but poorly analyzed by conventional cytogenetic methods (e.g. karyotyping). The breakpoints on chromosome 4 occur within a 113-kb gene cluster region involving the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene. The fusion results in overexpression and activation of FGFR3, which causes oncogenic signal enhancing cell proliferation and survival. The t(4;14) translocation provides important prognostic information in patients with plasma cell myeloma. It is often associated with poor survival and poor response to chemotherapy.
