A 21-carbon steroid derived from cholesterol and located in steroid hormone-producing tissues. Pregnenolone is the precursor to gonadal steroid hormones and the adrenal corticosteroids. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
Pregnenolone is a steroid hormone that is increased with hirsutism, adrenal carcinoma, and Cushing's syndrome due to ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma or ectopic ACTH-secreting tumor.
