Thyroxine
Active
Description
The major hormone derived from the thyroid gland. Thyroxine is synthesized via the iodination of tyrosine (monoiodotyrosine) and the coupling of iodotyrosine (diiodotyrosine) in thyroglobulin. Thyroxine is separated from thyroglobulin by proteolysis and released in the blood. Thyroxine is peripherally deiodinated to form triiodothyronine which exerts broad stimulatory effects on cell metabolism. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
