Descriptions

Lithium, symbol Li and atomic number 3, is one of only four elements thought to have been created in the first few seconds following the "Big Bang" nucleosynthesis. It is in group 1 of the periodic table, among the alkali metals and is the lightest solid element. Lithium is a soft, silver white metal that does not exist on earth in its pure form. Lithium reacts with oxygen to form black lithium oxide (Li2 O). It therefore has to be stored under the cover of oil to stop its oxidation. Lithium metal is used primarily in heat-transfer applicationns such as batteries (mainly cell phone and camera batteries), household appliances (toasters and microwaves) and in high performance alloys (aircraft construction). Lithium, atomic symbol Li, atomic number 3, and atomic weight 6.94, belongs to the alkali metals family. Salts of lithium are used to treat manic-depressive disorders. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006

Lithium is useful in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Lithium salts may also be helpful for related diagnoses, such as schizoaffective disorder and cyclic major depression. The active part of these salts is the lithium ion Li+. They may increase the risk of developing Ebstein's cardiac anomaly in infants born to women who take lithium during the first trimester of pregnancy. Lithium has also been researched as a possible treatment for cluster headaches. Copyright Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License.
