HLA-B27
Active
Description
HLA-B27 is an allele of the human HLA-B locus that is present in 1% of Asians, 3-4% of African-Americans, and 6-8% of Caucasians. HLA-B27 bears a strong association with ankylosing spondylitits (Marie-Strumpell disease), more than 90% of patients express this antigen. An HLA-B27 positive individual with consistent clinical and radiographic findings has an 100 fold greater risk of developing ankylosing spondylitis than a negative individual. The antigen is less strongly associated with Reiter's syndrome, psoriatic arthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. It has also been linked with congenital deficiency of complement components C2 and C4, adrenal hyperplasia, and inflammatory bowel disease. Copyright Copyright © 2006 - 2008 ClinLab Navigator, LLC.
