Version 2.77

Descriptions

A cold agglutinin is an autoimmune disease in which the body produces antibodies against red blood cells, causing the cells to agglutinate (clump together). These antibodies are usually IgM. The primary form of cold agglutinin disease is idiopathic. In other cases, the disease is a result of an underlying condition. Cold aggulitinin disease is known to occur in adults with a lymphoproliferative disease, such as lymphoma and chronic lymphoid leukemia, and in children with infections such as Mycoplasma pneumonia, mononucleosis, and HIV. Cold agglutinins affect many blood tests, such as red blood cell count, and by default, the mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume. If these indices are very high, a technologist should suspect a cold agglutinin. Copyright Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License.
