Coffee has an allergen code is f221, the Latin name is Coffea spp. Coffee comes from an evergreen, glabrous shrub or small tree which grows up to 5m tall if not pruned. It is widely cultivated in warm, moist mountainous regions around the world. The dried seeds or beans of the tree are roasted, ground, and brewed to make 1 of the 2 most important drinks in the Western World. Coffee contains over 200 substances, including caffeine, liverine, methylliberine, paraxantine, theacrine, theobromine, theophylline, acids, carbohydrates, lipids, minerals, and bases. Patients may be exposed to coffee in unexpected ways too. Coffee pulp and parchment are used as manures and mulches. Allergic reactions to ingestion of coffee are uncommon. Clinical reactions may be difficult to differentiate from those caused by caffeine or other additives. Instant coffee may have additives and coffee substitutes added, e.g. roasted chicory, chickpea, cereal, fruits and vegetables.
