Descriptions
Species of European house dust mite, widely spread, belonging to the family pyroglyphidae. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae are the two most important house dust mites and belong to the Pyroglyphidae family. D. pteronyssinus has worldwide distribution and prefers more humid climates. It is more abundant in Europe than in America. The most important allergenic proteins in D. pteronyssinus are Der p 1 and Der p 2. 80% of mite-sensitive patients display IgE antibodies to Der p 1 and Der p 2. Other mites in the Pyroglyphidae family share allergenic determinants with Dermatophagoides mites and are highly cross-reactive. House dust mites may cause the following symptoms in allergic patients: perennial-type asthma, rhinitis, and conjunctivitis, often with nocturnal or early morning episodes. D. pteronyssinus can also act as a trigger factor for atopic dermatitis in sensitive patients. Copyright Copyright © 2006 Phadia AB. Source: ImmunoCap,
The most important House dust mites are Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and (in drier areas) D. farinae. In subtropical and tropical regions the Storage mite Blomia tropicalis is also a major source of allergens, co-existing with D. pteronyssinus. Recent evidence shows that even these very general boundaries are blurring, and in many instances all 3 mite species may be highly relevant, causing widespread sensitization. But D. pteronyssinus is especially important because its distribution is for all practical purposes worldwide. Copyright Copyright © 2006 Phadia AB. Source: ImmunoCap, ImmunoCap
