Descriptions

The Common Hazel (Corylus avellana) is a species of hazel native to Europe and Asia. The fruit is a nut, produced in clusters of one to five together, each hazelnut held in a short leafy involucre ('husk') which encloses about three quarters of the nut. The nut is roughly spherical to oval, 15-25 mm long and 12-20 mm broad, yellow-brown with a pale scar at the base. The nut falls out of the involucre when ripe, about 7-8 months after pollination. The terms "Filbert" and "Hazel nut" are often used interchangeably for nuts from all plants in the genus Corylus, such as C. silvestris, C. maxima and C. colurna. These wild nuts grow in clusters on the Hazel tree in temperate zones around the world. Hazel is an aggressive spreader and is particularly common in Europe as a wild growth, where it has played a significant role in the development of the present forest ecology. Archaeology shows that the nuts were a prehistoric food and the wood a building material, and that tree populations were not adversely affected by land clearance for Neolithic farming.
