Descriptions
A plant species of the genus Urtica, family urticaceae, the roots of which have been used to treat prostatic hyperplasia. After brief heating to remove a stinging after taste the leaves can be eaten. Urtica dioica is also known as stinging nettle or common nettle. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
The species is distributed throughout Europe, western Asia and North Africa, and has been introduced in western North America, Australia and parts of South America.
Nettle pollen frequently induces asthma, allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis. Allergen-specific IgE to Urtica has also been detected due to occupational sensitisation.
