Description

SynF is a capsule biosynthesis gene that uniquely identifies Neisseria meningitidis serogroup Y from the other meningococcal serogroups.[https://www.cdc.gov/meningitis/lab-manual/chpt10-pcr.html] There has been a large increase in the proportion of meningococcal disease caused by N. meningitidis serogroup Y since 1989. In the mid-1990s, the incidence increased substantially in the United States (US) and during the past 10 years, it has also increased in Canada, Columbia and Norway. A potential cause of this shift is the fact that the polysaccharide capsule based vaccine formulated for serogroups A, C, W-135 and Y is ineffective against children under 2 years of age and has only been useful for outbreaks of the disease. Recent vaccines for serogroups A and C have proven to be more effective in that age group which has led to serogroup Y being the most likely cause of pneumonia from Neisseria meningitidis. Diagnosis can be confirmed with positive blood, CSF or pleural fluid cultures. PMID: 26057210 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
