Version 2.78

Description

Listeria are gram-positive, non-spore forming, intracellular, facultative anaerobic bacilli that cause outbreaks of foodborne disease across the world. It is broadly present in plants, soil, and surface water, but has also been found in silage, sewage, slaughterhouse waste, milk of normal and mastitic cows, and human and animal feces. Listeria has also been identified in cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry. The majority of outbreaks of infections in humans are caused by Listeria monocytogenes. Most infections by Listeria sp occur in patients with pre-disposing conditions including neoplastic disease, immunosuppression, pregnancy, extreme age, diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, cardiovascular and renal collagen diseases, and hemodialysis failure. The Listeria serovars 1/2a, 1/2b, and 4 are those most often associated with infection by Listeria. PMID: 1943998 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
