Version 2.78

Description

Water content of the human body can be divided into several components, including intracellular fluid (ICF, 2/3 of body water) and extracellular fluid (ECF,1/3 of body water). Extracellular fluid is fluid outside of cells and is further divided into plasma (1/5 of ECF), interstitial fluid (4/5 of ECF), and transcellular fluid (normally ignored in calculations). Transcelluar fluid is primarily contained in organs, such as the gastrointestinal, cerebrospinal and ocular fluids.

Total body water can be determined using methods such as flowing afterglow mass spectrometry (FA-MS). Extracellular fluid is measured using tracers, such as 82B2, chloride isotopes, and inulin) that go to the extracelluar space. Intracellular fluid is estimated by subtracting extracellular fluid from total body water. Copyright Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License.
