Description
Pholcodine (CLSI allergen code c261), also known as morpholinylethylmorphine, is an antitussive morphine derivative (cough suppressant) sold over the counter in many countries and also found in certain cough lozenges. Patients have demonstrated a sharp rise in IgE antibodies towards neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) when exposed to small doses of cough syrup containing pholcodine. These patients have suffered allergic anaphylaxis during general anaesthesia and are IgE-sensitized to NMBAs. Source: Regenstrief LOINC, PMID: 17983379
