Descriptions
Abnormal intracellular inclusions, composed of denatured hemoglobin, found on the membrane of red blood cells. They are seen in thalassemias, enzymopathies, hemoglobinopathies, and after splenectomy. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
Heinz bodies indicate a metabolic abnormality in the primary structure of hemoglobin. They are found in hemolytic anemias. Three major causes are: exposure to certain drugs, deficiency in reducing systems of blood and presence of unstable Hgb. Source: Regenstrief Institute
