Description

O-desmethyltramadol (M1) is an active metabolite of tramadol which is a narcotic analgesic used to treat severe pain. [PubChem: Tramadol] Tramadol and M1 work synergistically to relieve pain. M1 activates the opioid receptor responsible for the analgesic effect of tramadol. The parent drug prevents reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin which inhibits pain signal transmission in the spinal cord. M1 metabolism is highly dependent upon CYP2D6 which influences the efficacy of pain relief experienced by the patient. The predominant adverse side effects associated with tramadol use include nausea, vomiting, sweating, itching, constipation, headache and central nervous system stimulation.(http://boris.unibe.ch/69119/1/01213011-201407000-00007.pdf) Source: Regenstrief LOINC
