Description
Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) is a widely expressed, secreted 28kDa protein. It functions primarily to inhibit members of a large family of metalloproteinases (MPs) and, as a result, is involved in many of the same pathophysiological processes as MPs, e.g. wound healing, ovulation, angiogenesis, and cancer cell metastasis. However, it has also been found that elevated TIMP-1 expression in tumors, e.g. stromal cells, is correlated with accelerated tumor progression and poor prognosis.
