Coagulation factor IX activity actual/Normal
Active
Description
Factor IX is one of the thirteen plasma proteins known as clotting factors that regulate hemostasis. When functionality or quantity of Factor IX is decreased, increased bleeding occurs. The bleeding can be internal into the joints and muscles, or external from minor cuts, dental procedures or trauma. The severity of bleeding is associated with how much functional FIX is present in the plasma. The three categories of severity are: 1) mild-6-49% of factor IX required for normal clotting is present or functional; 2) moderate-1-5% of factor IX required for normal clotting is present or functional; 3) severe-less than 1% of factor IX required for normal clotting is present or functional. Factor IX deficiency is known as hemophilia B or Christmas disease. It is usually an inherited genetic defect of the F9 gene located on the X chromosome, though the cause of hemophilia B in one third of patients is spontaneous mutation of the F9 gene. Treatment for hemophilia B is human or recombinant factor IX given intravenously.[https://www.hemophilia.org/Bleeding-Disorders/Types-of-Bleeding-Disorders/Hemophilia-B] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
