Descriptions
Gadolinium. An element of the rare earth family of metals. It has the atomic symbol Gd, atomic number 64, and atomic weight 157.25. Its oxide is used in the control rods of some nuclear reactors. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
Gadolinium is a long-used contrast agent used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. It is a lanthanide series metal, which is administered in chelated form to minimize its natural cytotoxicity. Most of administered gadolinium chelate is excreted promptly in urine with a half life of 60-90 minutes. Lower doses used recently have alleviated concern of kidney and liver damage, although nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is still a concern. PMID: 29977584 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
