Descriptions

An opioid analgesic that is used as an adjunct in anesthesia, in balanced anesthesia, and as a primary anesthetic agent. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006

Sufentanil is a powerful opioid agonist and is used as a primary anesthetic drug, adjunct in anesthesia, and in balanced anesthesia. It produces a deep level of anesthesia and depending upon how it is administered, sufentanil is 5-10 times as potent as fentanyl. The analgesic affect of sufentanil is most likely because it is converted to morphine. It reduces neuronal excitability by opening calcium dependent inwardly rectifying potassium channels that cause hyperpolarization. https://www.drugs.com/pro/sufentanil.html) (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/sufentanil#section=Top) Source: Regenstrief LOINC
