Version 2.78

Description

Heptachlor epoxide is an organochlorine that is produced when heptachlor is oxidized. The oxidation process is carried out by many plants and animals, including humans, when they are exposed to heptachlor. Heptachlor is easily oxidized to heptachlor epoxide when it is exposed to air. Heptachlor was used to treat insects found in homes, buildings, and on food crops, mainly corn. Heptachlor is toxic to humans and animals, causing irritability, salivation and dizziness when recurrently inhaled or exposed in and around the mouth. Heptachlor production gradually ended in the 1980s, but remains in the soil and in hazardous waste sites. Heptachlor epoxide is more prevalent in the environment than heptachlor.[PubChem:13930] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
