Propoxur
Active
Description
Propoxur is a white, crystalline carbamate and cholinesterase inhibitor insecticide used to combat mosquitoes, flies, ants, fleas and ticks on pets, mites, ticks, cockroaches, aphids, leafhoppers and snails. It is used on food crops, lawns, flowering plants, in private homes, and public buildings. Propoxur has largely taken the place of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) when treating black flies and mosquitoes. Propoxur is toxic to humans when it is absorbed through the skin, inhaled, or ingested. Symptoms of poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, sweating, diarrhea, excessive salivation, weakness, imbalance, blurring of vision, breathing difficulties, increased blood pressure, loss of urinary and bowel control, and death from respiratory system failure. It is extremely toxic to birds, honey bees, and fish. Propoxur is not toxic to plants. When heated, dangerously toxic fumes are produced.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/metiram-propoxur/propoxur-ext.html] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
