Version 2.77

Description

The nanA gene is common across all strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae and encodes a sialidase protein (also known as neuraminidase) that plays an important role in the virulence of this pathogen. Because the nanA gene is conserved across all strains, its presence in clinical specimens can be used to identify Streptococcus pneumoniae as one of the pathogens responsible for a specific infection.
