Enterococcus faecium sodA gene
Active
Description
Enterococci species are common pathogens in hospital-acquired infections, including urinary tract infections and surgical wound infections. The sodA gene is conserved across enterococcus species, but the variability of a specific internal sodA sequence can be used to differentiate between enterococcus species. A particular sodA sequence identifies Enterococcus faecium, and the identification of this sequence in a clinical specimen can be used to identify E faecium as the pathogen responsible for a particular infection. PMID: 10618129 Likewise, the cpn60 gene is conserved across many bacterial genera, but it also contains an internal sequence with enough variation to distinguish among different enterococcus species. Identification of a particular cpn60 sequence in a clinical specimen has been used to identify Enterococcus faecalis as a causative infectious organism.
