Version 2.78

Description

Ebola virus is one cause of viral hemorrhagic fever disease and has 5 subspecies, including Ebola Zaire, which was the type identified in the West Africa outbreak in 2014. Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected symptomatic person or though exposure to objects (such as needles) that have been contaminated with infected secretions. Symptoms most often appear 8 to 10 days after exposure to the virus and include fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, lack of appetite, and abnormal bleeding.
Ebola Zaire is a single-stranded RNA virus, and it is the viral RNA that is detected by the Ebola Zaire real-time reverse transcription (rRT) polymerase chain reaction assay. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
