Description
This variable is used to capture why a patient is included within a study population, i.e. the basis for enrollment in the study. Categories of enrollment basis may include: 1) insurance, the patient is enrolled in an insurance plan that ties healthcare delivery to the institution, 2) geography, the patient is within a defined geographical area which can only receive care at this institution, 3) algorithmic, a local algorithm is used to identify patients with complete data capture, 4) encounter-based, first and last dates of encounters define the enrollment period, and 5) catchment area, the patient resides in a geographical area with high probability of receiving total care at the institution based upon marketing research.
