Description

Dechlorane is a white, stable odorless, synthetic, crystalline solid organochlorine insecticide and fire- retardant. As an insecticide, dechlorane was used to kill fire ants. When it was discovered to be a bioaccumulative pollutant in 1976, it was banned from use in the United States. As a fire-retardant, dechlorane was added to plastics, paint, rubber, paper, and electrical appliances. Symptoms of exposure to dechlorane can irritate the skin and eyes, cause headaches and dizziness, and nausea and vomiting. In addition, dechlorane can adversely affect the central nervous system, lungs, liver and kidneys. Dechlorane is also carcinogenic.[PubChem:16945] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
