Salivary gland protein 1 Ab.IgM
Active
Description
Salivary gland protein 1 (SP-1) antibodies may be useful markers for identifying patients with Sjogren's disease or Sjogren's syndrome early in the course of disease and those who have significant symptoms but are anti-Ro and anti-La antibody negative. Sjogren's disease is an autoimmune disease associated with kidney and lung disease as well as disorders of the salivary and lacrimal glands, which lead to problems with dry eyes and mouth. Sjogren's syndrome is associated with isolated salivary and lacrimal gland dysfunction and may be associated with other autoimmune disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus. Both the disease and syndrome are typically diagnosed later in the disease course due to non-specific or mild symptoms early in the course. SP-1 has been identified in mice based on mRNA expression in submandibular and lacrimal glands; although human SP-1 has not been isolated to date and its function is unknown, SP-1 antibodies have been identified as a specific marker in Sjogren's patients.
