Platelet satellitism
Active
Descriptions
Platelet satellitism occurs when platelets suround polymorphonuclear neutrophils to form "rosettes", especially when blood is collected at room temperature in the presence of EDTA. Source: Regenstrief Institute
Platelet satellitism occurs when platelets suround polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) to form complex rosettes. This tends to occur at room temperature when EDTA is used as anticaogulant. IgG autoantibodies directed against the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa complex of the platelets and the Fc receptor III of neutrophils have been implicated in this phenomenon. The occurrence of platelet satellitism may cause a false decrease in platelet counts and it is important to identify it when reviewing differentials. Information from Haematologica, Vol. 84(7): July 1999. Source: Regenstrief Institute
