Bacillus cereus
Active
Description
Bacillus cereus (B cereus) is a rod-shaped, endospore-forming aerobic or facultatively anaerobic, Gram-positive bacteria and is associated with two types of food poisoning: rapid onset with nausea and vomiting, and slower onset, primarily diarrheal illness. B cereus is also a less common cause of bacteremia/septicemia, endocarditis, meningitis, and infections of wounds, the ears, eyes, respiratory tract, and urinary tract. Treatment is with non-beta-lactam antibiotics. B cereus spores are resistant to heat, cold, radiation, desiccation, and disinfectants. Control is by good hygiene and adequate cooking and refrigeration of food. [NCBI Books: NBK7699] Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006, NCBI Books: NBK7699
