Methcathinone
Active
Description
Methcathinone is an illicit drug also known as ephedrone, which is a methyl derivative of cathinone, a stimulant found in the khat plant, Catha edulis. It is a substance of abuse and can be easily manufactured via the oxidation of pseudoephedrin. PMID: 15919169 Methcathinone abuse is a significant cause of parkinsonism among young patients in Eastern European countries. The final mixture contains a high concentration of manganese if potassium permanganate is used as the oxidant agent. The use of manganese-contaminated methcathinone may cause permanent neurological damage and severe disability. Drug users develop a distinctive extrapyramidal syndrome that resembles classic manganese intoxication. Methcathinone could have additive neurotoxic effect to the progression of parkinsonism.
