Description

7,8-Dihydrobiopterin (7,8-BH2) is an oxidation product of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), the primary active cofactor required for the synthesis of tyrosine and the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. PMID: 7689195 Defects in the metabolism or regeneration of BH4 are seen in patients with hyperphenylalaninaemia who may also have progressive neurological degeneration, mental and physical retardation, central hypotonia and peripheral spasticity, seizures and/or microcephaly. PMID: 19234759 One study reported a patient with atypical phenylketonuria caused by a 7, 8-dihydrobiopterin synthetase deficiency. PMID: 84153 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
