Monounsaturated fat intake
Active
Description
Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs or also called monounsaturated fats) are fatty acids that have a single double bond in the fatty acid chain with all of the remainder carbon atoms being single-bonded. By contrast, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have more than one double bond. Common monounsaturated fatty acids are palmitoleic acid, cis-vaccenic acid, and oleic acid. MUFAs are good fats that are liquid at room temperature, and turn solid when chilled. Common sources of MUFAs are olive oil, avocadoes and nuts. Other oils high in monounsaturated fats are; canola oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, and sesame oil. MUFAs are a healthy alternative to the trans fats and refined polyunsaturated fats found in most processed foods. Source: Regenstrief LOINC, MedlinePlus: Monounsaturated fats
