Homocysteine intake
Active
Description
Homocysteine is an amino acid and breakdown product of protein metabolism. High plasma concentrations of homocysteine may increase risk of cardiovascular disease. Levels of homocysteine tend to be highest for patients who eat a lot of animal protein and consume few fruits and leafy vegetables, which provide the folic acid and other B vitamins that help lower homocysteine. Homocysteine is also produced in the body from another amino acid, methionine. PMID: 18412997 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
