Cobalt intake
Active
Description
Cobalt (CO) is an essential trace mineral needed in small amounts in the diet and is an integral part of vitamin B12, cobalamin, which supports red blood cell production and the formation of myelin nerve coverings. Chronic ingestion, however, has caused serious health problems at doses far less than the lethal dose. There are no specific deficiency symptoms associated with cobalt, but as a component of B12, anemia can result from an inadequate intake. After nickel and chromium, cobalt is a major cause of contact dermatitis. Dietary sources of cobalt include green leafy vegetables, meat, liver, milk, oysters and clams.
