Shiga toxin producing E. coli (STEC) is also known as enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and verotocix E. coli (VTEC). STEC are strains capable of producing Shiga toxin and typically cause blood diarrhea. Hemolytic-uremic syndrome complicates 6-9 percent of STEC infections overall and about 15 percent of STEC infections in children under age 10. STEC strains are typically have one or both stx genes that encode for Shiga Toxins 1 and 2. Source: LOINC partner 1
