MR.spectroscopy

Description
Magnetic Resonance (MR) spectroscopy is a noninvasive diagnostic test for measuring biochemicals within the body. PMID: 19346641 Different biochemical markers, such as N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), choline, creatine, lactate, lipids and amino acids, contain various known amounts of hydrogen ions (or protons), and hydrogen analysis using MR spectroscopy can be used to determine the relative amounts of these biomarkers in the tissue being examined. Subsequently, the pattern of biomarkers is used to determine the presence of a tumor, necrotic tissue, or other pathology. PMID: 25905146 For example, in tumor tissue, NAA levels are decreased and choline, lipids and lactate levels are increased whereas in necrotic tissue, choline levels are not increased. MR spectroscopy may also be used to assess strokes, seizures, metabolic disorders, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
