Version 2.80

Description

2-chlorovinyl arsonous acid (CVAA) is a metabolite of the chemical warfare agent Lewisite, an organoaresenic blistering agent and lung irritant. CVAA is used to measure exposure to lewisite and is also inherently toxic. Lewisite's military designation is "L." It is an oily, colorless liquid in its pure form, and can appear amber to black in its impure form with an odor like geraniums. Exposure is usually through the air, or contaminated water or food. It can easily penetrate ordinary clothing and even latex rubber gloves. Skin contact causes immediate pain and itching with a rash and swelling. Large, fluid-filled blisters (similar to those caused by mustard gas exposure) develop. Sufficient absorption can cause deadly liver necrosis. Because it contains arsenic, lewisite has some effects that are similar to arsenic poisoning. Extensive eye exposure may cause permanent blindness. Treatment consists of removal from the body as soon as possible and providing supportive medical care in a hospital setting. An antidote is available. (While the anion name for chemicals is preferred, this term uses the acid name for this chemical, as there is no anion name available.) Source: Regenstrief LOINC , CDC: Facts About Lewisite
