Zika virus envelope E gene
Active
Description
Zika virus (ZIKV) is an arthropod-borne virus classified in the Flavivirus genus within the Falviviridae family 1. Flaviviruses include yellow fever virus, dengue virus, West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis virus and the Japanese encephalitis viruses. The genome of Flaviviruses is a single positive-strand RNA that is translated to produce a polyprotein that upon cleavage produces several proteins including the two major structural proteins (E and M). The "envelope E gene" and the "envelope M gene" correspond to the viral RNA regions that encode the E protein and the M protein. The virus envelope consists of a lipid bilayer derived from the host cell and 180 copies of M and E proteins arranged as 90 anti-parallel homodimers. N-linked glycosylation of the E protein may play a significant role in the pathogenicity of the virus. Further functional studies are needed to prove this hypothesis.
